Avery Koonce, a standout athlete from Thrall, Texas, tragically passed away at just 19 years old during her first year at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Known for her record-setting speed in high school track, Avery joined the Academy’s women’s track team with dreams of becoming a physical therapist for pilots.
On September 4, 2024, she was found unresponsive in her dorm. Despite efforts by emergency responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy revealed the cause as Paeniclostridium sordellii sepsis, following complications from a viral lung infection. Experts say early treatment might have saved her life.
Avery’s sudden passing shocked her community. She was known for her dedication, kindness, and bright spirit. A memorial was held on September 12, with over 100 classmates traveling from Colorado to honor her.
Her family described her as “a bright light in this broken world,” and said they are finding peace in faith as they mourn her loss.
Rest in peace, Avery.
